Ensure your ColdCard is Authentic by verifying it’s anti-tamper Bag Code

Ensure your ColdCard is Authentic by verifying it’s anti-tamper Bag Code

The first line of defence against counterfeit devices, the Coldcard Bag Code is a number printed on the tamper-evident bag when the Coldcard leaves the factory. This code is stored inside the Secure Element during production.

If the bag is opened or the device is altered, the number printed on the bag will not match the one stored in the device. Therefore, this verification step ensures that your device has not been tampered with before it reaches you.

How to verify your Coldcard Bag Code?

The first layer of protection is the tamper-evident bag, which has colorful, detailed printing, a barcode, and a water damage indicator. One of the most important features is the bag code. The factory stores this number in a secure part of the COLDCARD’s flash memory.

This creates a real link between the COLDCARD and its bag.

First, carefully check the surface and edges of the bag for any signs of being opened, torn, or damaged. Then look for the bag number to ensure it matches in all locations.

The bag number appears in 3 places:

  1. In the blue border at the top of the bag.
  2. Under the orange Coinkite® text, with a barcode.
  3. Inside the bag, on a small tab that is torn off.

Verify your Coldcard Bag Code

A new COLDCARD is packaged in a tamper-evident plastic bag, each with its own unique number (or bag code). This number is written into the device when it is placed in the bag and cannot be changed. When you power on the COLDCARD for the first time, you will be asked to check this bag number.

To verify the Coldcard bag code, turn on the COLDCARD by using a USB-C cable to plug the device into a power source, such as a phone charger, a PC, or CoinKite’s COLDPOWER device.

Once the device is powered on, first read and accept the terms of sale and use. Next, you will be asked to confirm the bag code.

Compare the bag code with Coldcard provided bag code verification:

  • If they match: The device is still factory-sealed and safe to use.
  • If they do not match: Stop using it, take photos of both numbers, contact the seller or manufacturer for assistance.

Note: The Coldcard bag code is made to be checked directly with the device and its firmware when the seal is opened. There is no official external way to verify these numbers. Providing the bag number before sale is not meaningful because it cannot be verified independently while the device is still sealed.
