Atomic Wallet scam? El Salvadorean charity robbed of funds and pleading for support

Once again, users of Atomic Wallet have fallen victim to severe theft.

This time, the incident hit close to home: A charity supported by our dear friend Alejandra Guajardo, better known as Ms Bitcoin, lost a significant amount of donations in the attack.

What makes this case especially egregious is that the stolen funds belonged to House of Life / Mi Casa, a local El Salvadoran charity on the frontlines of helping the most vulnerable – young teenage mothers and abandoned babies – giving them a chance at the most precious gift: life.

Atomic Wallet scam? El Salvadorean charity robbed of funds

We have warned against the usage of Atomic Wallet previously:

With Atomic Wallet, your private keys are stored directly on your internet-connected device. Unlike competitors like Exodus and Metamask, there is no option to pair it with a hardware wallet, which would have protected users from this attack. With hot wallets, you’re just a double-click away from launching the wrong software and losing everything.

We urge all our readers in the strongest terms:

Do not use –  and do not let your friends or family use –  a “hot device” to hold meaningful amounts of money. It is only a matter of time before those funds are stolen.

We are living in an increasingly adversarial digital environment – and if best security practices are not followed, the loss of funds becomes a certainty over time.

How can you support Mi Casa?

Alejandra has set up a Geyser Fund page, giving Bitcoiners around the world a way to help replenish the lost funds for Mi Casa.

If you’ve had a good year and some recent blessings in your life, consider sending a few sats their way.

Team BitcoinVN has already contributed to the fundraiser through our official Geyser account. You can follow us there to track our activities and tag along with any causes we identify as worthy of support.

How can I protect myself?

As we noted in our original article on Atomic Wallet: if you keep any serious amount of money in “crypto” (and there are valid reasons for doing so, given the dysfunction of the traditional banking system and the inherent flaws of government-issued fiat), you must ensure that your private keys are physically separated from internet-connected devices.

While more advanced setups exist, simply procuring and using a hardware wallet will protect you against 99% of common attack vectors.

For those based in Vietnam, our colleagues at BitcoinVN Shop are authorized suppliers of trusted devices from established manufacturers such as Trezor, Ledger, Coinkite, and Blockstream.
