Blockstream has expanded its hardware wallet lineup with the new<\/span> Jade Core<\/b> – a streamlined Bitcoin-only signer <\/span><\/a>designed for users who want to move their bitcoin into self-custody without paying for advanced features they may never use. How is my seed phrase generated?<\/b><\/h2>\n

Following the recent<\/span> Coldcard seed-generation failure<\/span><\/a>, many hardware wallet users are understandably paying closer attention to how their seed phrase is created.<\/span><\/p>\n

During setup, Jade Core creates a fresh 12- or 24-word seed phrase directly on the device using its onboard true random number generator. Only you receive the phrase, which should be written down and kept safely offline.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A device-generated seed still requires some trust that the hardware and software work as intended. Advanced users who prefer not to rely solely on the device can instead<\/span> generate a valid BIP39 seed phrase using private dice rolls<\/span><\/a>, with Jade Core helping to calculate the final word. An existing 12- or 24-word BIP39 phrase can also be imported, although a phrase previously exposed to an ordinary computer should not be considered newly secured simply because it is transferred to a hardware wallet.<\/span><\/p>\n

Life Savings vs. Daily Driver<\/b><\/h2>\n

While hardware-wallet seed-generation failures remain rare tail events, you never want such a failure to negatively affect your life for years, decades or even generations to come.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At a certain point, responsible risk management requires moving to a more redundant and secure setup, such as <\/span>multivendor multisig<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Multivendor Multisig<\/b><\/h2>\n

The term \u201cmultivendor multisig\u201d often sounds daunting to those who are not yet familiar with the concept.<\/span><\/p>\n

In truth, however, multivendor multisig provides a margin of error: <\/span>you can make mistakes and survive them.<\/b><\/p>\n

Whether you lose one of the keys, a threat actor gains access to it, or a hardware-wallet manufacturer supplies a device with faulty seed generation – as happened in the recent Coldcard case – a properly configured multivendor multisig setup remains secure because no single key is sufficient to authorize a transaction. The affected key can therefore be calmly replaced. By contrast, if your funds depend on only one key, seed phrase or vendor, any of these failures could result in catastrophic losses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At a certain level of wealth, implementing multivendor multisig becomes a no-brainer – you do not want your financial future to depend on a single device or manufacturer.<\/span><\/p>\n

We are not aware of any publicly reported losses among Coldcard users<\/b> who used an affected device only as one signer in a properly configured multivendor multisig. Because a single compromised key was insufficient to reach the signing threshold, the affected device could be safely rotated out without placing the entire wallet at the mercy of that one signer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
