{"id":7531,"date":"2022-03-23T11:57:11","date_gmt":"2022-03-23T04:57:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.bitcoinvn.io\/?p=7531"},"modified":"2024-05-13T07:38:19","modified_gmt":"2024-05-13T00:38:19","slug":"digital-nomad-cryptocurrency-pioneer-jon-myers-of-powertrade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bitcoinvn.io\/news\/digital-nomad-cryptocurrency-pioneer-jon-myers-of-powertrade\/","title":{"rendered":"Digital Nomad and Cryptocurrency Pioneer \u2013 Jon Myers of Powertrade"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you have been in Saigon for a while as an expat \u2013 there is a good chance that you have run into Jon or at least know several people who\u2019ve been rolling with him on occasion.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes also described as the \u201cgodfather\u201d of the Digital Nomad movement to Saigon, it was Jon\u2019s seminal\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/digital-nomad-stories\/bootstrapping-in-saigon-fc974436738\">\u201cBootstrapping in Saigon\u201d<\/a>\u00a0piece from 2013 which created a huge pull towards Vietnam\u2019s Southern Metropolis and put it distinctly on the map in the Digital Nomad world.<\/p>\n<p>But not only that: Early adopter of Bitcoin since 2013 he has since then worked on a variety of projects and in various roles in the industry, before he decided last year to join forces with other Saigonese Crypto Veterans such as Mario Gomez-Lazada and Tom Howard to bring\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/power.trade\/\">Powertrade<\/a>\u00a0into the world, catering to a growing market which is increasingly eager to utilize derivatives such as Options in order to manage their portfolio risk.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q1: Hi Jon! Vietnam has been seeing a pretty harsh 2021. Lockdown measures\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoinvn.io\/vietnam-lockdown-emily-dallara-efforts-amidst-economic-devastation\/?lang=en\">which in severity and length probably topped every other country<\/a>\u00a0in the world\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.xinhuanet.com\/english\/asiapacific\/2021-10\/20\/c_1310257390.htm\">devastated<\/a>\u00a0the previously booming local economy and forced a lot of expats out of the country over the course of this summer.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>How is the situation in Saigon\/Vietnam right now?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jon Myers:<\/p>\n<div id=\"bitco-1970942600\" class=\"bitco-ad-inline\">\n<div id=\"bitco-100732864\">\n<div class=\"td-all-devices\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/35ouhPu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoinvn.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/cash2vn-ad-201110.png\" alt=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/32LbCLR\" width=\"300\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Well, right now the country is more or less open and things appear to be running smoothly here. What made you stick around here for that long? What enticed somebody like you to plant your roots in this very specific place? What was it compared to your previous stay in Thailand that tipped the balance for Saigon\/Vietnam?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jon Myers:<\/p>\n<p>I think Vietnam, specifically Saigon, was a bit of \u201clove at first sight\u201d with me. I really loved the people, the country, city and culture. I\u2019ve always felt welcomed, and at home in Vietnam. The country itself with its favorable youth demographics and skilled technical populations is in a favorable position for an economic recovery.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q3: When was the first time you stumbled upon Bitcoin \u2013 and when did it \u201cclick\u201d for you?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jon Myers:<\/p>\n<p>Somewhere around 2010\/ 2011 I believe. I stumbled onto Bitcoin through a private community I\u2019m in. The thing that \u201cclicked\u201d the most for me would be the \u201ccensorship resistance\u201d and a particular world view of the increased politicization and technocratic control of commerce.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q4: Last year you set out again as a (Co-)Founder of a new venture in the space: <a href=\"https:\/\/power.trade\/\">Powertrade<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>How did the idea for the new platform develop, why did you decide to go ahead with it \u2013 and how has the journey been so far?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jon Myers:<\/p>\n<p>So far, so good. I\u2019m really proud of the company we have built. And are you guys hiring?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jon Myers:<\/p>\n<p>Yes, we\u2019re always hiring \u2013 designers, engineers, marketing folks, etc.,<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q6: What do you expect for the market and general adoption in 2022? And what\u2019s your view of what\u2019s ahead in general in the rest of this decade?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jon Myers:<\/p>\n<p>2022 will be more complicated. One crypto \u201ctrend\u201d I guess I see from my vantage point is I\u2019m seeing the rise of more structured products that may end up replacing traditional CLOB trading products.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q7: Back to Vietnam \u2013 after the pretty horrific year of 2021 which saw quite possibly the most severe and long-lasting lockdown restrictions on Earth and which led to a huge exodus of foreigners as well as general deep disruption of the local economy: What\u2019s ahead for Vietnam?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>And since a lot of people these days are looking for an \u201calternative home\u201d due to their own countries\u2019 policies: Would you recommend Vietnam as a possible \u201cexit option\u201d? And for who this is *not* the place-to-be?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jon Myers:<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m generally quite optimistic on Vietnam and will be here for the foreseeable future. The entrepreneur community goes through its waves of people in and out of the country. I think we are entering a new wave as far as I can tell with new people arriving.
