displaying the actual market value of the VND<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So why are there these differences in the rates and what are the reasons for the spread between official and market rate?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First let\u2019s look at the definitions:<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Official rate<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provided by the country\u2019s Central Bank<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basically the board of governors of the central bank decides by decree what the rate is supposed to be.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oftentimes the official rate is close to the actual value of the currency in the market and the central bank possesses certain levers to get the official and the market rate closer in line (e.g. working with their Forex reserves to drive up\/down the value of the domestic currency in the marketplace).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In case of a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/f\/fixedexchangerate.asp\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">non-free floating currency<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> regime, divergences between the official and the market rate may occur if the central bank interventions prove insufficient to close the gap between officially proclaimed exchange rate and the actual exchange rate of the currency in the open marketplace.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Market rate<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The actual exchange rate of the currency determined by participants in the marketplace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It does not matter if the official exchange rate of currency A to currency B is proclaimed to be 10:1 by the central bank.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the participants in the marketplace decide that the purchasing power is actually smaller; e.g. 15:1, then this is the price you get if you participate in the marketplace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The places who would still offer the official rate of 1:10 would be sold out and bankrupted in very short order.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This happened e.g. when the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.encyclopedia.com\/history\/united-states-and-canada\/us-history\/panic-1893\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">US bankrupted itself in the late 19th century<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when they tried to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sherman_Silver_Purchase_Act\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> implement a fixed currency exchange rate between silver and gold<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which did not reflect the actual market rates.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/QyhxdiVzV0oumyr_e8Q2iwKN6_lbJGCKdDUo8sAXnyr4vMFC-6Ml6PRfu3C6BtWI6sVlTNrtfOsuAGIJpvh1AJEEg2N6LR-DfZdv-G-ggguenC6U08XHqhfzNC8VxR7bFB1CCZ2D\" alt=\"A fixed exchange rate which does not reflect the actual exchange rates won\u2019t persist for long - shrewd speculators will bankrupt the counterparty in short time\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">A fixed exchange rate which does not reflect the actual exchange rates won\u2019t persist for long &#8211; shrewd speculators will bankrupt the counterparty in short time<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any free arbitrage between official and actual market rate won\u2019t last for long since the market participants offering the official rate will be bankrupted by arbitrageurs who take advantage of the differences between official and market rate.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Vietnam is not alone with a local a Bitcoin premium<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just some of the other recent examples where the official rate set by the central bank does not reflect the actual value of the underlying fiat currency:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Argentina: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uk.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/why-argentina-seeing-bitcoin-premium-150010580.html?guccounter=1&amp;guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly9kdWNrZHVja2dvLmNvbS8&amp;guce_referrer_sig=AQAAACfh2YbkXWHFcW0rzFUiqYnwz00umM7tsNPdilO_ZMKN4Se0aqIvr5tT5oHRpvH1We2E6sg5g4qESlczFDpLq21sKA9NI4jkmWngGQsa-AVDSP4ehc9FjiaIeHATw6BVml37BRDv3bNZ3sNYV03nHlX3c2zZ8Jg-3W78qm3WLR2j\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why Argentina is seeing a Bitcoin premium<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nigeria: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/in-nigeria-one-bitcoin-can-cost-68000-heres-why\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Nigeria, one Bitcoin can cost a hefty 24% premium<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zimbabwe: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoinist.com\/bitcoin-price-hits-75000-on-zimbabwe-localbitcoins\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bitcoin is trading at an eye-watering 600% premium in Zimbabwe<\/span><\/a><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Venezuela: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/bitcoin-trading-venezuela-just-hit-163808825.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bitcoin Trading in Venezuela Just Hit an All-Time High Despite a 40% Price Premium<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Note: Do not expect the prices of US\/EU exchanges if you are based in a country with tight capital controls and an official currency exchange rate which does not reflect the true purchasing power of the currency.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What are the reasons for the price differences in Vietnam?<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>Capital controls<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As most Vietnam-based clients and users are very well aware of, Vietnam currently does not have free flow of capital across borders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is in line with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/t\/trilemma.asp\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cImpossible trinity\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of policies to be pursued by a nation\u2019s central bank.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only two out of three objectives can be met at the same time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vietnam follows a fixed-exchange-rate policy as well as a sovereign monetary policy. This comes at a cost of inhibiting the free flow of capital across borders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/ekWH-bpRLE6gCJFbx4AgTOEIlS5PWvYcggKssb4Iu6F4572d1F1Tf4JSf2RxAwb0ggWrB4KfMmIbCYVZ9c-QTOQ19KVQT0Qw38GbWwL15IUsOhMalHIBJxzFizsRlVzWLKYJVBUR\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For this reason cross-border arbitrage is slow, expensive and cumbersome &#8211; which means that prices in Vietnam will not always be in line with the international market rates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Vietnamese central bank has recently undertaken various measures to curb the outflows of Forex reserves via various semi-legal &amp; grey-market channels, such as fake invoicing and\/or usage of credit\/debit cards for various purchases offshore.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shutting down these capital outflow channels is leading to a higher price premium pressure on the local crypto prices, since crypto has now \u201cless competition\u201d as one of the few remaining ways to move money out of the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Kim Chi Premium!<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since Lunar New Year 2021 we have seen a strong rebound of the infamous \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/k\/kimchi-premium.asp\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kim Chi Premium<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d which made its first appearance in late 2017\/early 2018 around the last cycle\u2019s market top.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/u27W1hGd_fY4he8sLIriHr7rOWMDBqk3HdNI1KXwesPVwA6EIMTTTT1TYLhPpnso2-F7mWvP1boFVjca6300seye08TltjZT3CHTctnQ8BRoVuOyP8w2VjAR_PwbkbO1znO2atAf\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In recent days we have seen the Kim Chi Premium reaching up to 20% over the Western market prices &#8211; Koreans going all in with both hands<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, if you have been in Vietnam for any decent amount of time you are certainly aware of the large numbers of Korean expats living and working in Vietnam, led by brand name large-scale FDI investors such as Samsung or LG Electronics over various mid-sized manufacturing, trade and service companies down to individual Korean businessmen connecting Vietnam with their home market in Korea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of these Korean businessmen, expats and delegates are actively arbitraging the Kim Chi Premium &#8211; and are therefore happily buying Bitcoin at 5% premium and more in Vietnam, if they have the channels set up to sell it for 20% in Korea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While you might find Bitcoin at 5% over e.g. Coinbase USD rate rather expensive &#8211; the Korean countrymen will see them as cheap if they can fetch the premium for which Bitcoin trades in their home market.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>When do prices in Vietnam normalize again?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, we got no crystal ball.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What we can tell is that the current period is indeed the highest and longest-lasting premium we have seen in over seven years of operation outside the Q4\/17 &#8211; Q1\/18 market top of the last cycle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the whole course of 2020 the premium over the western markets usually ranged just within 1-2% compared to the official rate provided by the central bank.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tendencially there is a good chance that the premium will persist for a fair while longer as long as the Kim Chi premium persists in this bull market cycle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So do not expect the prices to drop much closer to the official central bank rates soon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unless of course: The central bank reacts by officially devaluing the Vietnamese Dong further against the US Dollar &#8211;
