With the end of World War Two in the Pacific theatre just a few weeks prior and the following retreat of the Japanese administration in Indochina (1941 to 1945), the opportunity arose for Vietnam to return to the status of a sovereign nation for the first time in over a century.
While the struggle for self-determination of the Vietnamese people was far from over in 1945, the Declaration of Independence on the 2nd of September 1945 was a significant milestone in the long path towards a free and self-governing nation.
So if you’re based in Vietnam, enjoy the long weekend and commemorate the events and sacrifices the forefathers of this land made which allowed Vietnam to remain an independent sovereign up until today.
