Scammers use accusations of criminal activity, threats of arrest and fake investigations to pressure victims into complying. Understanding their tactics can help you recognise the warning signs before handing over money or sensitive information.

What is a law enforcement impersonation scam?

In a law enforcement impersonation scam, a criminal pretends to be a police officer, investigator or prosecutor. Related scams involve impersonating financial regulators or other government officials. The caller may claim that:

Your bank account is linked to criminal activity.

Your identity has been used to commit fraud.

Your cryptocurrency wallet is under investigation.

Your funds are connected to money laundering.

Your accounts will be frozen unless you cooperate.

The goal is to make you hand over money, cryptocurrency, account credentials or personal information. A transfer may be presented as a requirement to “verify” your funds, move them into a supposedly safe account or clear your name.

The central tactic is psychological manipulation. The scammer creates a frightening situation, claims authority over you and insists that you act immediately, before you have time to question the story or seek advice. In a particularly coercive version known as a “digital arrest” scam, victims are pressured to remain on phone or video calls and told not to contact family members or anyone who could help them challenge the deception. Fear and isolation allow the scammers to maintain control while demanding payment.

How the scam unfolds

They establish fake authority. An unsolicited call or message comes from someone claiming to represent the police or another agency. They may produce a badge number, forged documents or an official-looking video backdrop. None of these proves their identity.

They create an emergency. You are told that you are implicated in a crime and face arrest or frozen accounts unless you cooperate immediately. The pressure is designed to stop you from checking their story.

They prevent independent verification. They insist that you stay on the call and keep the “investigation” secret, even from family or a lawyer. This cuts you off from people who could recognise the scam.

They demand money or access. You are instructed to transfer funds to a “safe account” or “investigation wallet,” or disclose credentials supposedly needed to resolve the case. The funds go to accounts or wallets used by the criminals.

What scammers might say

These examples illustrate the kinds of language scammers may use:

Accusation: “Your bank account has been linked to a money-laundering investigation.”

Threat: “If you do not cooperate immediately, we will issue an arrest warrant.”

Secrecy: “This investigation is confidential. You must not tell your family or anyone else.”

Control: “Stay on this video call. You are not permitted to disconnect.”

Payment: “Transfer your funds to this secure account so we can verify their source.”

Crypto transfer: “Move your cryptocurrency to this investigation wallet to prevent it from being seized.”

How do scammers know your personal information?

Data breaches can give criminals information that makes their approach convincing. Depending on what was exposed, a caller may already know your full name, address, date of birth or which services you use. They can build a personalised story around those facts, for example by naming a cryptocurrency exchange you use before claiming your account is involved in a criminal investigation.

Knowing things about you does not prove who they are. Even accurate personal information does not authenticate someone claiming to be a police officer. Do not fill in missing information or correct outdated details for them. End the call and independently verify any claim that concerns you.

How to protect yourself from law enforcement impersonation scams

Where practical, block or silence calls from unknown numbers on your phone and in messaging apps. If you need to receive unfamiliar calls, use screening or voicemail. If a caller threatens you or pressures you to transfer money, hang up.

Never share passwords, one-time codes or wallet recovery phrases. Do not open links, install software or grant remote access to your device at an unsolicited caller’s request. If you remain concerned about a claim, contact the agency using official details you find independently, not the caller’s number or links. A familiar-looking caller ID does not guarantee a trusted caller because caller ID can be faked.

Conclusion: Keep your money and hang up

You do not need to stay on a threatening call to prove your innocence. End the conversation, speak to someone you trust and, if you remain concerned, contact the relevant agency using official details you find independently. Never transfer money to a supposed “safe account” or disclose passwords, one-time codes or wallet recovery phrases to satisfy a caller’s demands.

How multi-vendor multisig can help protect your life savings

Your life savings should not depend on how calmly you handle a threatening phone call. For long-term Bitcoin savings, a multivendor multisig setup with independently controlled keys and a separate approval process can prevent one pressured person from moving the funds alone. Where appropriate, additional timelock restrictions can prevent spending before a preset time.

The protection comes from putting these barriers in place before someone tries to manipulate you. Our BV Prime – Custody team can guide you through a personalised self-custody setup, with individual support covering multisig, key storage, backups and recovery, built around your circumstances and the savings you want to protect.

Learn how law enforcement impersonation scams use
