at BitcoinVN Shop on Twitter\/X <\/i><\/a>as they review, verify and share new information as it becomes available.<\/i><\/p>\nThe Coinkite situation today is certainly \u201cbearish\u201d in the short term for Bitcoin\u2019s fundamental strength.<\/p>\n
A great many good, committed Bitcoiners have been badly burned – some of them devastatingly so. It is reasonable to assume that some, after years of grinding and diligently stacking Sats only to see them disappear in one fell swoop, may give up on Bitcoin altogether: the ecosystem, the community, and perhaps even the asset itself.<\/p>\n
We are likely to lose good, well-intentioned people who contributed to Bitcoin – the network, the economy and the community – in their own ways.<\/p>\n
Bitcoin got smaller today. That is not good news.<\/p>\n
For a long time, we have argued that the focus should not be on \u201cmass adoption\u201d or bringing \u201cthe whole world\u201d into Bitcoin. It should be on reaching those who are ready for it and growing that group from \u201c1%\u201d of the population to \u201c2%\u201d.<\/p>\n
But if single-signature self-custody can no longer be considered a safe starting point – which is deeply unfortunate, but a reality we must confront after today\u2019s fiasco – the initial bar for becoming a \u201csovereign Bitcoiner\u201d rises considerably. The more expertise, coordination and operational discipline required to hold Bitcoin safely, the fewer people will be willing or able to do so.<\/p>\n
The potential group ready to embrace the orange pill becomes smaller. Given the current state of the technology, instead of being able to reach \u201c1%\u201d of the population, we may be able to reach only \u201c0.5%\u201d. This is not a positive development.<\/p>\n
Nor will the people now leaving Bitcoin – or partially or fully disengaging from it – be easily replaced.<\/p>\n
Only a very small part of the population is ready and receptive to the orange pill. If half of that group suffers severe side effects from taking it, that is not positive news.<\/p>\n
On the other hand, yes – the ecosystem will mature further over the medium and long term.<\/p>\n
The safety commercial aviation enjoys today was built, to a significant degree, on lessons learned from fatal incidents along the way. We expect the same dynamic to play out here over the long term.<\/p>\n
But while a fatal plane crash should prompt deep introspection into what went wrong and how to avoid a repeat of such a scenario, now is not the time to go out and \u201ccelebrate\u201d the incident as something that will strengthen security across the industry over the long term.<\/p>\n
Yes, greater security will likely be the eventual outcome. That is what professionals do when faced with the smoldering remains of previous design iterations that proved unable to withstand the challenges they were supposed to withstand.\u00a0<\/p>\n
But we also must refrain from an attitude of: \u201cGreat that it crashed – now we can finally get serious about safety!\u201d\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n
Nobody wants to work with – or trust – people who view others getting burned as a necessary part of the process.<\/p>\n
Yes, realistically, such incidents are unavoidable as industries develop and mature. This is true in every sector where security matters.<\/p>\n
No, we should not tell those who were badly hurt that their losses were a worthwhile sacrifice. The difference in attitude matters.<\/p>\n
We are all trying to build a better, more resilient and secure ecosystem. That means doing our utmost to prevent damage in the first place – and displaying genuine remorse when our design choices end up hurting people.<\/p>\n
Back to the matter at hand:<\/p>\n
The broader weaknesses of single-signature self-custody were vaguely known, yes – and often it takes a very real tragedy to learn the necessary lessons and implement lasting changes.<\/p>\n
But we should not forget that many people were badly hurt by today\u2019s incident, and many of them will, for entirely understandable personal reasons, reduce their contributions to Bitcoin going forward.<\/p>\n
For years, the advice has been not to rely on a single-signature setup to secure a significant portion of your life savings. Now that the worst-case scenario has materialized in practice, multi-vendor multisig will increasingly be viewed not merely as \u201crecommended,\u201d but as the minimum standard for anyone serious about self-custodying a substantial amount of Bitcoin.<\/p>\n
Our thesis of a secular \u201cbull market\u201d for the cybersecurity industry has – for better or worse – also been validated. Demand for cutting-edge expertise from \u201ccombat veterans\u201d who continuously sharpen their skills will remain high for years to come.<\/p>\n
AI may make building products easier than ever. Securing them – especially when they hold highly sensitive data or, in this case, digital money – is an entirely different battlefield.<\/p>\n
The role of multisignature security providers will likewise consequently move from the periphery toward the core of the industry, from software developers to the custody and consulting professionals who help clients implement these systems securely. What was previously viewed as a \u201cnice-to-have\u201d for the exceptionally paranoid is likely to become a baseline requirement for anyone serious about securing digital assets.<\/p>\n
In the long term, we will emerge from the wreckage of today\u2019s fiasco with a more secure ecosystem. But today, and for the immediate future, the wider Bitcoin ecosystem has undoubtedly taken a hit – as has Bitcoin\u2019s near-term perceived credibility as a secure way to store savings outside the traditional financial system.<\/p>\n
There is nothing positive about people who tried to do the right thing – but were just a little less paranoid than the attackers required – losing years of savings, work and sacrifice overnight to a successful exploit.<\/p>\n
What next?<\/h2>\n
Lamenting alone will not move us forward – so it is time to get back to taking productive action.<\/p>\n
In the short term:<\/p>\n
Over the coming days, further damage mitigation is essential. Review your own exposure and alert anyone you know who may be at risk.<\/p>\n
Do not panic. Do not act on random advice that has not been thoroughly vetted – or, in the worst case, may come from people with ulterior motives.<\/p>\n
Keep a cool head, but act decisively.<\/p>\n
In the medium term, the shock waves from this event will hopefully begin to strengthen the ecosystem.<\/p>\n
Until now, multi-vendor multisig has generally been presented as a recommendation for those seeking to follow self-custody best practices.<\/p>\n
From now on, we will be far more decisive in our communications – both online and in person – and advocate multi-vendor multisig as the standard for anyone self-custodying substantial long-term Bitcoin savings.\u00a0<\/p>\n
We will also seek to deepen our collaboration with industry partners and peers to help bring about this new reality.<\/p>\n
